Why are kayaks placed cockpit facing out on roof racks? ?

We are traveling 2500 miles and those two big sails on top of the car are killing the gas mileage. We tried cockpit covers but they do not stay on at highway speeds. We thought about turning them around so cocpits face in but we can't seem to find any info on why they are always instructed to face out. Is it okay to face them in on a j-rack and the "stacker" type?|||Don't see why not - the other way is to tie them "reverse" - so the rear end faces the front of the car (smaller area for wind resistance)|||Umm, mines always upside down, cock pit facing the roof. The other way just creates huge wind drag/resistance, and as you said uses up a lot more petrol.

My brothers boat is always facing out on the J rack (we use surf board racks for the other two and stack them two high so nothing can get into the cock pit)

I think it's just easier to put it on facing outwards.
