If you want versatility, go with a lake canoe. I like the Michicraft brand of aluminum canoes. Will be useful in rivers too, but a bit less maneuverable than a whitewater canoe because of the keel on the bottom. But, it's easier for the novice to keep straight.



You'll be able to fish more comfortably, and store your gear more conveniently as well, and have convenient places to tie off anchors. Also very good to share with a second person.

If you intend to be alone on large bodies of water, without rapids, then you should try a sea kayak. When I took a good one out on Lake Superior, waves crashed over the bow without making the ride feel unstable. Your center of gravity is low. You efficiency of travel cannot be beat. The sea kayak is slender and does not have as much drag as a whitewater kayak or canoe.
