Can a ski rack support kayaks?

Hi,

I'm asking this here as I'm pretty sure most of you have sport racks on your cars to carry your skis/snowboards, etc.I'm on the verge of buying a sportrack for my car, and will definitely get one for winter sports. Does anyone know if there is something that can be added to be able to tie a kayak to it as well in the summer? Or does a kayak entail a new sort of sport rack?

Thanks. All help appreciated!|||Some can be modified to carry a canoe or a kayak. Check with the retail vendor of the brand you are considering. Have fun, be sure to learn the eskimo roll. I see lots of the kayaks on the sport racks around Seattle and Yakima.|||if you have the right kind of rack you can snap these vertical bars onto it that you can put your boat on

this is a really fancy one

but really they're just to prop up your boat so you can tie it in place. I think those ski rack/bike rack in one racks can work.|||Yakima and Thule are the two most popular brands of racks in the US. In both cases they offer racks that can be used for skis and for kayaks. Likewise, both brands offer attachments so the sports racks can be affixed to either a factory roof rack or an after-market roof bar.

The snowsports racks can be removed and a kayak rack can be mounted to the load bars, or you can simply purchase some foam blocks specifically made to haul a kayak. The foam blocks usually come with two 1"x24' tie down straps. You can also use additional rope to secure the kayak to the bumpers.

I normally haul kayaks simply by placing one on my roof racks and using two straps. The foam blocks are good if you don't even have roof racks, but you don't need them if you have factory racks or load bars.
