Cheapest safe way to carry kayaks on Jeep Wrangler hardtop (94)?

Want to carry 1 or maybe 2 sea kayaks on a 94 hardtop. Many advertised rack systems but they are confusing and costs for various "parts" mount and installation looks like a pain. What's easy, cheap, and safe for short hauls (e.g., 20 miles or so) -- live on Lake Superior coast. Thanks.|||I carry all my toys on a Yakima system with the various components. Kayak is carried with saddles in the front and rollers in the rear. You can also do four saddles or there is a bracket, think it is called a J-bracket for carrying multiple canoes on the rack.

Best of luck.|||Cheap and safe? Buy a good rack, you will be liable and get sued if your kayak breaks loose and causes an accident and injuries.

I bought a Yakama system. You don't need all the bells and whistles, just buy the basic rack and strap the kayaks down.|||They have styrophoam that fits the contour of the bottom of the kayak and the other side is flat to sit on the roof. Then you can strap it down good and it wont move. I wouldnt recommend driving 70 on the freeway with them though.
