The shortest kayaks I know of are just under 6' long. They're whitewater play boats, designed to do all sorts of tricks, flips, and aerials. Here's a video Eric Jackson, one of the best playboaters in the world, putting one through its paces:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8awtJlR4鈥?/a>
Hard to use? It does take a lot of skill and practice to pull off those kind of moves. But the newer model playboats are pretty user-friendly as far as just running whitewater. Slow? Yes. Not a good choice for paddling long distances on lakes, oceans, or calm rivers. Price? Retail price for a new one is usually $900-1000; used ones are considerably cheaper.
Overall, it's a good choice for an ambitious beginning whitewater kayaker or one with more experience. Not so good for other purposes.

What length is considered a short kayak?
My sister and I just purchased a future beach trophy 126 and fusion 124 to get into the sport. Will these kayaks work okay on coastal waters or should they stay in lakes? What is typically a decent length for a kayak? Thanks in advance! What length is considered a short kayak?
These are both 10 foot kayaks and are considered short recreational boats for fishing and flatwater paddling in protected waters like small lakes and slowmoving rivers. They are not safe for coastal waters for a number of reasons. One is they have yawning large cockpits that allow the boat to quickly fill with water. You really need a sprayskirt if you are going to be on the ocean in a sit-inside kayak. There are some available for boats like these but they don't work well because water pools on the large surface area and tends to collapse the deck and flood the kayak anyway. Second, they don't have sealed bow and stern bulkheads to keep the boats from swamping and sinking. Three, they are too short and wide to track well and paddle efficiently in wind, current and swells. You can easily be swept offshore in one of these things and be unable to make it back to land no matter how hard you paddle. Also, though most beginners think boats like this are great because their flat bottoms and wide width makes them feel more stable in calm water, the fact is that if they are hit with a large enough boat wake or wave broadside they will flip over in a heartbeat. Flipping back over and emptying such a boat with a hand pump and re-entering it is very difficult, if not impossible, in some conditions. Shorter kayaks also have a lower upper limit on the speed at which they can be paddled -- it is simple physics, a longer water waterline is a faster boat.
Ocean worthy sea touring kayaks typically are 14' to 18' long (surf skis are even longer) and less than 25" wide with small cockpits that fit a spray skirt and sealed bulkheads. Many also include a drop down skeg or rudder to improve tracking in following seas. They will cut through waves rather than get bounced around by them and can be rolled back up by the paddler while still in the boat if flipped (once you've learned that skill).
Also, these little boats are "one size fits all" which really means they don't really fit anyone well. To really paddle and control a kayak you more or less "wear" it -- performance kayaks are sized to the height and weight of the person. You use your hips, legs and torso to steer and paddle a kayak, even more so than your arms, if you know how to paddle correctly. Sure, your arms hold the paddle, but your body drives the power behind it -- not so easy to do in a sloppy fitting boat.
So, enjoy your new toys but be aware of their limitations. Get some paddling lessons if you can, it will greatly increase your enjoyment and skills for paddling and teach you important safety procedures, like adding flotation to the boats and self-rescue techniques.
If you really get into kayaking, and still think you want to try to ocean, see if you can rent or do a dealer demo with real sea kayaks and get a feel for the difference. Most people who get into kayaking trade up their boats after the first season or two once they understand what kind of performance improvements they want -- fortunately, most all kayaks have good resale on the used market so you could probably trade up to a sleeker, faster, more sea-worthy used boat for not a couple hundred more than you would get selling those ones you bought eventually. What length is considered a short kayak?
I'm not sure about those brands of kayaks but my 8 foot Calypso kayak is considered short, compared to all my family and friend's kayaks.

What is the most versitle kayak there is out there?
I want a kayak that can handle rapids, but is ok to take out onto a lake or slow river also. I'm looking for the SUV of Kayaks! What is the most versitle kayak there is out there?
The problem with most "versatile" kayaks is that they don't do any one thing really well. Many manufacturers of entry level kayaks will describe their hulls as being versatile for a variety of uses... but what makes a hull great at one thing (handling rapids) intrinsically makes it horrible at another (paddling on a slow river / lake).
To top that, descriptions of any paddle craft are totally subjective. People seem obsessed with "the fastest" the "most versatile" or the "easiest to paddle," etc., but what they fail to mention is paddler height, weight, and skill level. If I've been paddling whitewater for 10 years, I could probably take just about any kayak down a class II or III drop with ease. A novice whitewater paddler would likely capsize and / or find it very challenging at best.
And on top of that: what kind of rapids? Do you know the whitewater class rating? Is it a river or creek? (That can make a big difference in hull choice too.)
To make sure you get the most out of your boat purchase, buy the kayak that is suited to your height, weight, and local water. If the closest rapids are an hour away, but there's a lake with a nice stretch of quiet creek to explore just 10 minutes away... guess where you're going to do most of your paddling? :) Buy the quiet water boat, and when you decide to try rapids, you can always rent.
If all else fails, the only kayak I know of that comes close to being a true rapid runner (old school) and being manageable on the flat stuff is the Prijon Yukon Expedition. What is the most versitle kayak there is out there?
Ah, you newbie kayakers with your fantasies...
There is no such thing. That's like saying you want a Formula 1 sports car you can take off road or a fast, light road racing bicycle that can also stump jump on single track.
A boat designed for quick turns and stability in white water will be short, wide and flat-bottomed so it will be slow and poor tracking in flat water or a river. A sea kayak that's long and narrow with a fast-chined hull profile for swift forward speed and tracking will not be maneuverable in rapids. The paddles are different too.
You can get a mid-sized plastic "hybrid" that you could use for both but it won't perform very well for either purpose so it will just hold you back from developing any skill or having optimal fun. Serious kayakers have separate boats for different waters for good reason. What is the most versitle kayak there is out there?
Easy! A four meter whitewater slalom kayak. A quality boat in either glass/resin or rotomolded plastic will answer your specifications. Don't neglect lessons if you are a first-timer.
Save your money and take a kayak intro course FIRST !
You wouldn't take a road bike with skinny tires offroad jumping over things
just like a mountain bike with big fat tires isn't comfortable for 100 mile trips

Where to have a lake kayaking vacation in the northeast?
I'm planning a vacation with my family for August. My brother wants to be able to use his kayaks so the vacation will be at a lake...but where? I'm looking for somewhere not in New York or New Jersey where I'm familiar with, where there are rolling mountains, beautiful scenery, and activities other than kayaking like horseback riding.Where to have a lake kayaking vacation in the northeast?
Vermont, and Maine would be great for this sort of vacation. Think of the scenery in the movie On Golden Pond.

Barton Cove is a camping site in i think MA. located right on a river. you can pay to get a shuttle all the way up the river and it will take you a day to get back down the river but you will end up right at your campsite again. My campsite was also located on the river. in the middle of the river was an island with an eagles nest. it was cool to watch the eagle hunt for fish in the morning.

How to store a Kayak from a ceiling?
What is the best way to store kayaks (12 foot) from a ceiling of a garage. I still need to be able to park under them (2 kayaks). I want to find a cheap option that will keep my Kayaks safe.
Thanks. How to store a Kayak from a ceiling?
Fashion some slings from a medium heavy line.
Store boats upside down. Plastics require it and others will discourage animals from nesting.
Best of luckHow to store a Kayak from a ceiling?
I used a couple of eye hooks and some rope. Just find the joist in the ceiling. Screw the eye hooks in far enough apart from each other so the kayak will fit between them, repeat the same at the other end of the kayak, then tie some rope from hook to hook so that is long enough to fit around the kayak. Then slid the kayak under the loops of rope so it hangs. That's it. Cost me about $5. Hope this makes sense..How to store a Kayak from a ceiling?
The best way may not be the cheapest. Ask a carpenter friend to suggest a method. He will check clearances and locate suitable/safe hanging points. Will your car and kayaks clear the door opening? How physical are you? Can you hoist the boats into slings? How stiff are your kayaks? Can you simply use an eye bolt to hold each end to the ceiling? Have you room to use a cantilever rack?
I know kayaks are expensive and needs to taken care of. I recommend you to see www.oldtownkayaks.net, I read some articles there regarding kayaks care tips and etc.

Does it matter where you sit in a tandem kayak?
I am slightly disabled. My husband, teen daughter and I are planning on going kayaking through an outfitter that provides beginners' trips. They use tandem kayaks. They prefer to have kids go with a parent. If I go with my daughter, does it matter who sits in the front or back of the kayak if I can't paddle as much as her? Where should the stronger person sit or doesn't it matter?Does it matter where you sit in a tandem kayak?
The stronger person should sit in the back, that way they can be responsible for steering the kayak as well as keep an eye on the person in the front and offer assistance if necessary.Does it matter where you sit in a tandem kayak?
In swiftwater I would have the the person that steers the boat in the back... You can always add ballast to the bow for some hole bashin'!Does it matter where you sit in a tandem kayak?

Please, tell me about composite and/or kevlar kayaks. Who makes the best kayaks and why is it the best?
It depends on whether you want a sit-on-top kayak or a sit-in, and also whether you want a recreational/touring kayak or white-water kayak.
I am most familiar with recreational/touring kayaks. For sit-on-tops, I would recommend the "ocean kayak" brand. For sit-in kayaks, I recommend Dagger or Perception kayaks. They make a lot of models, with a large variety of options. Good luck! Kayaking is so much fun with both model types! Please, tell me about composite and/or kevlar kayaks. Who makes the best kayaks and why is it the best?
composite kayaks are much lighter than plastic but they are also more likely to be damaged. They are more of a touring kayak than a white water. Im not sure who makes the best there are hundreds of companys.

Is kayaking a good way to flatten the stomach?
I am at the lake for a month visiting family, and they have kayaks I can use. I thought I could kayak for about an hour a day. Is this a good way to burn off lower and all over belly fat? I want to take advantage of this benefit if it is one.
Thanks!
Any comments that are stupid links to website I don't care about (and are not about my topic) WILL be reported. Is kayaking a good way to flatten the stomach?
It is good overall exercise, but it won't especially affect your tummy. For that you do crunches and you watch your carb intake.
Do not expect to get a perfectly flat belly - that's only possible when we're 14 - 15 years old. Or in the rare instance when we happen to have chosen the perfect parents - 'cuz it's largely genetic. Is kayaking a good way to flatten the stomach?
yeah, the core is used extensively for stabilization and balance. you might get big lats too

Do river kayaks work ok for lakes?
If by "river" you mean a boat designed for use in white-water rapids, yes you can use it on a lake though it will not be quite as fast or track as well as a boat designed for flat water lakes and ocean use. A white-water kayak is made to turn quickly and will tend to be shorter, fatter and have a flatter bottom for negotiating shallow, rocky waters. Flat-water boats are longer, have narrower beam (width) and a deeper, sharper keel line -- some will also have a moveable rudder to aid tracking and turning (all these features make a flat-water boat unsuitable for rapids). Also, a paddle the right length for white-water will be a little shorter than what would be ideal for distance straight paddling on a lake. You'll have to paddle a little harder to stay straight and get any speed.
It's kind of like with snow skis: longer, narrower ones go faster straight downhill while shorter, wider ones are used for the quick turns and jumps of mogul skiing.
So, a "river" boat is "OK" on a lake but not great.Do river kayaks work ok for lakes?
definitely!Do river kayaks work ok for lakes?
Yes
the only thing that makes a "river kayak".... termed such
is the fact that it is constructed considerably stronger
to withstand the rigors of river navigation....
So... kayak on sailor....
give the lakes of the world a spin !!
鈽?////Do river kayaks work ok for lakes?
c_kayak_fun summed it up: "ok" but not great. I can think of 2 reasons why you'd consider a river (whitewater) kayak instead of a regular recreational kayak for the lake:
1. You have an interest in both whitewater and lake paddling.
2. You found a really good deal on a whitewater kayak (sometimes used old-school whitewater boats go for $100 or less if you're patient).lund boats

How can I transport a kayak or canoe if I have a sedan for a car?
I'm going to buy a kayak or canoe but can't figure a way to transport it , and have already looke at portable kayaks which either looked flimsy or over priced. Please helpHow can I transport a kayak or canoe if I have a sedan for a car?
You can either get a roof rack that will attach to your car even if you have a naked roof.
Or use foam kayak pads and run your straps through the doors.
This is how we do it in the BWCA
A friend of mine has infaltable tubes she puts on the top of her car to rest on the to ends of the kayak and then wraps the straps through your car to secure it to the roof.. if you look around you can find them.
I'm sure its the same as foam pads.
First...read about canoes and kayaks. Try the library or book shop for texts. The boat shop can supply transport equipment and show you how to use it safely. Never rely on rubber bungees. If you don't know how to kayak or canoe please take some lessons. Learn the safety rules. Visit your local DNR office and learn about license requirements as well as operatiung rules.
You'll need a roof rack for your car. Both Thule and Yakima make excellent rack systems.
Although the racks are somewhat expensive, they are worth it. You can carry all sorts of stuff with a good set of racks - bikes, skis, surfboards, ladders, lumber, mattresses -- even a kayak. How can I transport a kayak or canoe if I have a sedan for a car?

Kayaks, Kayak rack rack, and periferals (sp?): Best time to buy for least expense?
I am interested in purchasing kayaks (enclosed, stable: float if we flip), rack (such as Thule) and the necessary equipment (paddles, jackets...). When is the best time of year and where to buy these items for least price?Kayaks, Kayak rack rack, and periferals (sp?): Best time to buy for least expense?
Hi, The other poster is right. If you're in an area where the water is frozen in winter, then winter will be the best time of year. You can get lots of reseources online, like at paddling.net. Use their guidelines section on the site and select the "buying a boat" link. You can learn a LOT from there. For additional info, search the messageboard archives for personal advice from the 55,000+ members of the site.
The classified ads there are great, but realize that the people on "P-Net" are well aware of what their boats are worth. I'd peruse craigslist and ebay, and don't forget your local garage sales!Kayaks, Kayak rack rack, and periferals (sp?): Best time to buy for least expense?
It can depend on where you are at, but Kayaking is typically a year round sport. Here in NoCal you can boat during the rainy season, spring melt, summer dam release, or lake and ocean/surf paddle, so there is typically no off season to score a good deal on gear, its pretty much the same year round.
The best place to get good gear and advice on boating is your local paddling club. I learned to Kayak by joining a club. It's a good way to network with other boaters, get free lessons, and is usually an excellent source for finding affordable boats and gear. Do a google search of any local kayaking and canoeing clubs in your area. Boating clubs typically have a newsletter or a website with affordable used gear.
Also try craigslist. There you can find a local seller, so that there are no shipping costs. Kayaks are very pricey to ship.
You should also check the want adds of your local newspaper. I've bought and sold a couple of used boats there as well.
Good luck, and happy boating.

What spray skirt will fit a Coleman Rebel kayak?
I got this kayak at Dick's Sporting Goods. They sell a Coleman brand "medium spray skirt" online, but I'm not sure if it fits all Coleman kayaks. I know that Coleman kayaks are actually manufactured by a company called Emotion and that Pelican and Coleman are affiliated. Anyway, the cockpit is approximately 43'' by 21.5". It seems every spray skirt manufacturer makes spray skirts specifically for their kayaks only. Thanks. What spray skirt will fit a Coleman Rebel kayak?
That's an odd size. I checked Seals and Harmony, who make the widest range of skirts for a variety of kayaks and have charts listing dimension ratings and model match-ups, Seals says the Coleman Rebel has to be made to order custom and won't fit a stock skirt and the largest skirt Harmony makes is 41" long.

A cockpit that large will only support a skirt to protect against paddle drip and sun anyway-- it is too big for whitewater and will tend to cave in when a lot of water collects on it. But then that kayak you bought isn't designed for whitewater or ocean use. It's a thinly molded rec boat that lacks bulkheads and the hull strength and profile for fast or rough water, so it really is not designed with a skirt in mind. This boat was only intended for small lakes, ponds and flatwater rivers, not much more than a warm weather float toy.
If you plan to paddle waters where a skirt is a necessity, you need to buy a better kayak than that one. That's one drawback to cheapie rec style kayaks -- you will end up spending more to outfit them, and be seriously limited in where you can take them. You would need a set of flotation bags to safely take this kayak anywhere more than 30 feet from shore or in deep or colder water, plus it lacks perimeter rigging for re-entering. By the time you get those accessories and a custom skirt, you would have been better off paying a couple hundred more for a properly equipped real whitewater or touring kayak.

What is the difference between a creek kayak and a freestyle kayak.?
I want to get a freestyle kayak but I want to make sure it would do just as good through a class III rapid as a creek boat. Do freestyle kayaks flip easier than a creek kayak? What is the difference between a creek kayak and a freestyle kayak.?
Freestyle boats are designed for doing tricks. Most modern rodeo tricks involve some sort of flipping-- not just tipping over and rolling up, but standing up on end, cartwheeling, flipping end-over-end (looping), and doing flips and moves after popping up completely out of the water (aerials). To do tricks, freestyle kayaks are designed to react a lot more to the water when on waves, in holes, and on eddylines. So if you're not watching what you're doing, yes you can flip.
Creekboats are designed for difficult water. They have lots of volume, lots of speed, and usually have rounded edges that are more forgiving. You'll have a better chance of punching through a hole or avoiding one altogether in a creek boat. On easier water, you'll find the creekboat easier to paddle than the freestyle boat.
Manufacturers generally make kayaks that are "in betweeen", too. For instance, "river-running playboats" are a little more user-friendly than pure freestyle boats but can still do a lot of tricks. Pure river-running boats might be able to surf and spin a little better than creekboats, but can still handle Class IV+ ok.
So do freestyle kayaks flip easier than creek kayaks? You bet! Do they do "just as good" on Class III? Depends on what you mean. The freestyle kayaks won't be as forgiving. You might have a little more of a learning curve in one, but IMO they're a lot more fun! And as the other answer mentions, it will make you a better paddler when you want to move to the harder stuff.
Start by looking at some of the manufacturer sites. You'll be able to see some of the differences in design (length, volume, shape) between playboats, creekers, and everything in between. Then get some lessons if you haven't already and start demoing. What is the difference between a creek kayak and a freestyle kayak.?
Creek kayaks are designed for river/creek running; to make them suitable for this, amongst other things, they are faster in a straight line, more forgiving on a rapid and have a variety of important safety features built into them.
Freestyle kayaks are designed for playing on a river features (waves and holes); to do this they are short with low volume, flat planning hulls and "hard" edges.
This means that when paddling a freestyle kayak you are more likely to get caught out by a river feature and flipped over. However don't let that put you off getting a freestyle kayak.
Freestyle kayaks are much more fun and because they are more challenging to paddle they really help to improve your river running skills (catching eddies, making the line, etc).
My advice would be if you are only running rapids of class III difficulty then a freestyle kayak should be fine for you to use.
Its really helpful if you talk to other paddlers and see what they recommend for you, also try borrowing different boats to get a good feel for the differences between them before you decide what to finally buy.
In the end just make sure you feel comfortable in what you are doing and are out on the river with other experienced paddlers who can help you improve.

10 pointsss the best answer is about canoes and kayaks?
how canoes are viewed in america versus other parts of the world????10 pointsss the best answer is about canoes and kayaks?
as somebody who has owned and used canoes and motor boats, not only are there places you can NOT put a motor boat into, even if you could just carry it to the water, its a completely DIFFERENT experience.
canoes, half the pleasure of using them is the journey. propelling yourself across the water with only yourself and maybe another person providing power and steering, and doing this in something that can be tipped easily with just one wrong move.
canoes, its more sightseeing and less going.
i wish i still had a canoe still.
the boat is great. gets me from the luanch ramp to the fishing spot in little time with its 40+ mph speeds. but half the time i could just carry a canoe to the shore very close to the spot. and with the boat, fish and GO. you dont really pay any attention to what is around you in between you and your destination.
and that is a real loss. half the time i'm fishing i'm also watching the local wildlife on the shore and around the trees. my favorite local lake has plenty of deer, and boar (wild "pigs") and even bobcats and mountain lions.
while mountain lions dont really come out and get seen in daylight, a WILD bobcat at less then 50 yards is a real sight to see......10 pointsss the best answer is about canoes and kayaks?
I think that canoes are generally viewed as a part of Native American history, so they are associated with North America, and native tribes that once lived here.10 pointsss the best answer is about canoes and kayaks?

Are inflatable kayaks stable enough for some one to learn in?
Hello Davie, I use inflatables to introduce beginners to moving water. They are stable, quite responsive and allow the paddler to experience the ever changing environment of moving water. They can do this with confidence and not have the constant fear of capsizing making their experience less enjoyable. Enjoyment is a great learning medium and I have many paddlers quickly introduced to a biggish moving water environment who then progress to solid kayaks very quickly and with the skills of operating on white water already in place find the transition a very positive experience.
Inflatable kayaks are also awesomely versatile and can operate in many situations. we use ours in the surf, on flat water and up to grade 5 river running all with great success.
I hope this helps you a bit.Are inflatable kayaks stable enough for some one to learn in?
A qualified, yes. Inflatable kayaks are soft and that makes them hard to turn. Often paddling energy is lost because of the hysteresis effect. The kayak structure absorbs some of the paddling effect. Rigid kayaks respond instantly to a paddle stroke assuming that the paddler is seated correctly and has his feet braced on foot blocks. Next: try rolling an inflatable, Chances are that it is very difficult to maintain your 'seat'. I don't know of any kayak school that uses inflatable kayaks to teach with. I have never seen or heard of an inflatable kayak being used in any kind of a competition. If you simply want a boat to 'play' around with, go with the inflatable. If you want to experience real kayaking learn in a rigid boat. Are inflatable kayaks stable enough for some one to learn in?
An inflatable kayak is just as safe to use as a hard-shell kayak. In fact, because of the buoyancy of the inflated chambers, inflatables are safer to use than traditional boats and preferred by the coast guard as offshore rescue vessels. Inflatables are almost impossible to capsize and handle better in rough water. Several air chambers assure buoyancy even if one chamber looses air pressure due to a leak. They are one of the best options for learning.
Touring, offshore and whitewater kayaks are available for one and two persons. Inflatable kayaks are easy to paddle and compete favorably with expensive fiberglass models.

What is the best kayak available for the lowest price?
I'm in the market for a kayak, my first. My friend and I are buying together and will go out together, but we are interested in 2 decent and comfortable kayaks that we can throw in the truck and go for the day. Weight capacity must be in the high 200s and has to have enough leg room for someone that is 6'3" Any suggestions? We are college students and need something that we could get the whole package for mid-500 or below 400. Thanks! What is the best kayak available for the lowest price?
I would have to say the best Kayak for the money, is a Sea Eagle.I have 3 of them and they are great. I have one for my wife, one for my kids and mine. I use mine every weekend to go fishing.I love them! Good luck! What is the best kayak available for the lowest price?
Check out the kayak packages from www.Kayak.net. This is where I bought my kayak. They offer a beginner package (kayak, paddle, %26amp; life jacket) for around $500.
They have some great video reviews of their kayaks, this really helped me with my purchase. What is the best kayak available for the lowest price?
Gotta go to S. C for that!
The only way you are going to get a decent set of gear in that price range is to check Craigslist and buy a used boat. You don't specify what kind of water you are planning to paddle: lakes? coastal? creeks? flatwater? whitewater? leisurely floats? fishing? Do you care about speed and maneuverability or do you just plan to bob along for a couple of hours? Without knowing that stuff I can't recommend specific models. A lot of boats are just not going to fit someone of the size you describe, especially cheapo plastic boats from discount stores.
First, decide what you plan to use the boat for (there is no such thing as an "ideal" all purpose kayak.) Then check the Craigslist classifieds for kayaks for sale in your price range. Look up any model you see listed for sale at the boat reviews on http://www.paddling.net to get the specs for it and to read reviews on the performance. There are also used kayaks for sale listed on that site in the classifieds (though these will tend to be higher cost, higher performance boats.)
Then, be sure and "try on" any boat that you consider buying -- kayaks need to be fitted to your body proportions.
Don't forget to budget for a PFD and paddle. Don;t skimp on the paddle -- better a crappy boat with a good paddle than a better boat with a crappy paddle. This means avoid the $30 aluminum shaft paddle. You should pay at least $50 and closer to $100 for a paddle -- it's what you use to propel the kayak and a heavy and too-short "boat anchor" paddle will make paddling a drag instead of a pleasure.
Deals can be found. I got a used 16' Dagger Magellan rotomold plastic sea kayak from Craigslist a few years ago for $400 (it was $1200 new -- the owner threw in a neoprene sprayskirt too), found a decent 2-piece fiberglass paddle for half off at $60 and a nice MTI PFD from Sierra Trading Post for $40. At $500 total I've got a quality whole second boat set-up to loan a date or friend that I would not hesitate to take on any river, lake or ocean. If I had gone to a discount or general sporting goods shop to buy new, I could have only gotten a flimsy, bulky and slow "recreational" kayak (I call them "plastic bathtubs") with a clunky aluminum paddle and junky PFD for that $500.
A lot of people selling used boats this time of year -- it's far and away your best option.barometer

Do you prefer canoes or kayaks and why?
just wondering im more of a kayak guy myself but i still like a good old canoe trip from time to time.Do you prefer canoes or kayaks and why?
Kayak for sure in either fresh or salt water. You can still pack in enough gear to camp and fish in a kayak and you can catch ocean waves and standing waves in fresh water too. I can't say I don't enjoy canoe trips but I don't do them as regularly. I lived on the beach in Southern California and sunk a kayak 3/4ths of a mile out to see with all my fishing gear and clothes on in 58 degree water. I was able to tie the submerged kayak to a kelp bed, save my tackle box and fishing pole, the paddle and beer. It took me almost a hour to swim in. I had a beer, collapsed in the warm sand and fell asleep. A hour later I put my wetsuit on and paddled out to the kayak on my surfboard tied it to the leash and paddled it back in. Despite all the trouble I've gotten into, I still love kayaks. Do you prefer canoes or kayaks and why?
On the ocean, I'll definitely take a kayak. I can't imagine being out there in a canoe when the wind comes up. On whitewater, I've only been in a kayak, but I do plan on trying a whitewater canoe at some point. It seems to be a bit of a lost artform in my area.
In the end, what really matters is having fun on the water.Do you prefer canoes or kayaks and why?
Whitewater kayaks obviate the need for as much skill running whitewater as an open whitewater canoe does. Whitewater canoeing is a greater challenge than decked kayaking. Canoes are more comfortable than kayaks.

Do they make car top kayak racks for 2 kayaks?
Most definetly. You will end up buying a rack kit that fits your car. Check out Thule or Yakima both make great rack systems, and it's easy to figure out what you need to fit your car. Once you have the rack on your car you can look at different options to secure the boats to your rack. Most shops will even install them for you. Good Luck
http://www.kayaks.net/car-racks-and-trai鈥?/a>Do they make car top kayak racks for 2 kayaks?
Most all roof racks can carry two or more kayaks -- it's up to you to buy the accessories to do it. Regular touring kayaks (which are long and thin) can easily sit side by side on their hulls flat on the rack on most cars without anything more than foam blocks. Wider sit on tops or whitewater kayaks can be laid on their sides using upright supports like the Thule J-racks. I used to carry three sea kayaks on the roof rack of my Volvo wagon. The Thule rack systems tend to work better for kayaks than the Yakima types. Many people just use foam blocks strapped right on the car roof with tie downs and bow and stern lines -- no rack at all. Always use bow and stern lines to your bumper though -- even below highway speeds the wind turbulence can rip your boat right off the roof if the front and rear are not secured at each end.Do they make car top kayak racks for 2 kayaks?

Bikes or kayaks on 2008 Prius?
Toyota says pull no weight with car. It would seem as though two bikes on the back or two kayaks on the top would weight less than two 200 pound passengers in back seat. What do you (or Toyota) think?Bikes or kayaks on 2008 Prius?
The main problem would be the drag. This won't hurt the Prius any but it will reduce mpg. Some people put the kayaks in the Prius (depending upon the kind of kayak and how much stuff is inside already). Other people tow a small trailer (under 500 lbs.) occasionally.
A good idea is to get a Scangauge ( http://www.scangauge.com/ ) so that you can watch the engine and inverter temperatures. Note that hitches for the Prius are for rack mounting so they don't have safety chain eyelets or lighting hook-ups. You'll have to get these fabricated.
So far no one has reported any damage (short or long term) and people have been towing lightweight trailers since the Prius first appeared in the US in 2000.
IMHO, the reason that Toyota doesn't set a towing limit is:
1. The suspension and brakes aren't designed for towing.
2. There is no frame reinforcement.
3. (and perhaps most importantly). If they set a 500 lbs. limit, people would tow 5,000 lbs. So by setting a 0 lbs. limit people will only tow 250 lbs. to 500 lbs and will be cautious about doing it.Bikes or kayaks on 2008 Prius?
I think it may be an issue of weight versus drag.
A large square box weighing 20 pounds would create the same wind drag as a 200 pound load. Keep it light, keep it inside and you will do great!
The prius is a cute eco friendly car - unfortunately for those of us who travel distance and need to transport large or heavy goods, a large 6 cylinder vehicle is still ideal. Not eco friendly, but sure beats having to replace a worn out car every 20,000 miles!

The prius is a cute eco friendly car - unfortunately for those of us who travel distance and need to transport large or heavy goods, a large 6 cylinder vehicle is still ideal. Not eco friendly, but sure beats having to replace a worn out car every 20,000 miles!
Has your town ever been plagued by low flying, migrating kayaks? If so, what was it like?
it was pretty scary. there were kayaks everywhere flying through peoples houses and all they were trying to do was get to the ocean to sail. so we had our town mayer politely speak with the head kayak and ask him to either fly to the ocean higher in the sky or use the streets and road rules. He even gave them a google maps direction sheet to the nearest beach.Has your town ever been plagued by low flying, migrating kayaks? If so, what was it like?
Oh yeah, I remember that. I had to hijack one and threaten to shove an oar up it's a** if they didn't go away. Good times...Has your town ever been plagued by low flying, migrating kayaks? If so, what was it like?
They take a different route,
None come through this way....!!

Do they make kayaks you can mount a trolling motor onto?
A motor like this:
http://fortmyers.craigslist.org/lee/spo/鈥?/a>Do they make kayaks you can mount a trolling motor onto?
Well you can easily make a bracket to mount the motor, it's incredibly light. The problem is that you need a car battery to run the motor, and you will probably need a charging system too. I really wouldn't want to be riding around for any length of time with a lead-acid battery in the kayak with me. I mean what do you do if you capsize? I suppose it could be used to get to and from a larger boat from a dock or something like that, but as a main form of transportation it would probably defeat it's purpose. You could use it for a couple of hours to move the kayak, but then when the battery runs out of juice it will all just be extra weight that you have to paddle back to where ever you started from.permit practice test

As a recreational kayaker - are longer kayaks better than shorter kayaks?
There are three main categories of kayaks, whitewater kayaks, sea kayaks, and recreational kayaks. Whitewater kayaks are short and are extremely maneuverable. Sea kayaks are long, relatively skinny, and are really good at tracking. A recreational kayak is anything that does not fit into either of these categories. They are often used by less experienced paddlers on small lakes or on gentle whitewater (Class I and some Class II). If a boat is to short, it just turns from side to side when you paddle. If it is to long for you, it can be very hard to handle in close quarters and dangerous in rapids. If you want to go 5-10 miles in a day, definitely get longer kayaks. If you want to go more than that, get a sea kayak. If you want to use it on a river, stick with a shorter kayak.
Right now I am building a 17'6" sea kayak. I will be able to paddle around the Maine coast for 10+days at a time in it, but I would not be able to take it down nearly anything with a current. As a recreational kayaker - are longer kayaks better than shorter kayaks?
A long kayak has more wetted surface than a short one, which means a long hull has to tackle more water than a short one. A long kayak in motion tends to stay in motion, but first one has to get it there. If a paddler is strong enough to handle the wetted surface of a long kayak, he or she will reap the efficiency benefits once the boat is up to speed. Weaker paddlers may find a kayak with less wetted surface is quicker for them.
I have a 14', two 12' and two 9' kayaks. The 14' has a really nice smooth, fast glide but is such a pain to load in and out of the truck that I never use it. The 12' kayaks are decent in speed and easier to handle when loading. The 9' kayaks are all over the place, but really easy to turn quickly and maneuver. I can carry the 9' kayak with one hand.
My brother who kayaks weekly prefers the longer kayaks, while my dad who only goes one a year prefers the shorter ones.
Have fun!

Depends what you want to do.
If you want versatility, go with a lake canoe. I like the Michicraft brand of aluminum canoes. Will be useful in rivers too, but a bit less maneuverable than a whitewater canoe because of the keel on the bottom. But, it's easier for the novice to keep straight.
You'll be able to fish more comfortably, and store your gear more conveniently as well, and have convenient places to tie off anchors. Also very good to share with a second person.
If you simply want ease of paddling, can't beat a kayak. The right kayak can be handled easily by one person out of the water, even when putting up on a roof rack. A canoe may require the help of a second person.Which one should i buy a canoes or a kayaks .please help with this as I'm new to this?
When it comes to choosing which craft to choose, it all depends on how you want your experience to be. If you want to have your friends and family in one boat altogether, then canoes are the right choice for you. They are very slow, unlike kayaks. If you are a thrill seeker and want to encounter extreme moments, then kayaks are exactly what you need. They are designed for high-speed sailing, waterfalls and ocean conditionsWhich one should i buy a canoes or a kayaks .please help with this as I'm new to this?
If you intend to be alone on large bodies of water, without rapids, then you should try a sea kayak. When I took a good one out on Lake Superior, waves crashed over the bow without making the ride feel unstable. Your center of gravity is low. You efficiency of travel cannot be beat. The sea kayak is slender and does not have as much drag as a whitewater kayak or canoe.

Spray decks on different kayaks?
I have had quite a bit of kayaking lessons, and i now have the money to buy all the equiment but i find it difficult to research it; but can sports kayak spraydeck fit ANY sports kayak?
Also Whats a Really good website to buy from?
Thanks.Spray decks on different kayaks?
Answer, no! Think about it. Cockpits vary in both length and width. The cover can be made of many materials. Some of them can be stretched to fit an opening and also may be snugged up to fit a smaller one. Note too, covers come in many weights. Inquire at the manufacturer about recommendations. The shop you buy a boat from should also be able to outfit you with a good fitting cover. Don't buy a cover unless the site will allow you to return it if it doesn't fit. Also, be sure the cover opening is the right size for you (waist size).Spray decks on different kayaks?
Kayak skirts are sized, and the sizes vary by boat model and brand of skirt.
My favorite brands are Seals and Immersion Research. I got my skirt from www.kayaks.net, they have sizing guides available for you to use below the description of each skirt model.

I think there is a Cosco in Ponce, they usually have them. In San Juan you can get them at a store called Beachcats.
Question about piloting/"driving" motorless boats (Canoes, Kayaks, etc.)?
I have done this before, but I was wondering if there was something I could read online perhaps that may refresh my memory. I'm actually gonna be using an inflatable raft with two oars. Thanks in advance.
-NQuestion about piloting/"driving" motorless boats (Canoes, Kayaks, etc.)?
The easiest thing to do is go on youtube.
See:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uwflkbfp鈥?/a>
As you can see you sit with your back to the direction you want to go, and row. to move right or left to correct for current you just paddle on one side or the other not both. Paddle on the side opposite from the way you want to goQuestion about piloting/"driving" motorless boats (Canoes, Kayaks, etc.)?
That's "rowing" :-) at least in the youtube video
Canoes you face forward and use one paddle on alternate sides. Kayaks you face forward and use a two-bladed paddle. Slightly different techniques, e.g. in a kayak you can drop the paddle over your shoulder to use it as a rudder for quick turns.
A "raft" may not have rowlocks (places to pivot the oars) and might have paddles, not oars. (as in "whitewater rafting")Question about piloting/"driving" motorless boats (Canoes, Kayaks, etc.)?

EVIL OTTERS, Can otters tip over kayaks?
A man told me and my friend today that the otters in the lake can tip over our kayaks, i seriously doubt it since otters are small and light and the kayak is like 16ft and heavy. I think he just wants to scare us away from the dam wall, what do you thinkEVIL OTTERS, Can otters tip over kayaks?
I rather doubt it as well. All species of otters are very curious and playful, but the ordinary North American species are too small to have much of an influence on a 16 foot boat with over 100 pounds of ballast sitting in it. I don't know if wild otters would approach people either, despite their temperament. I'd say the worst that could happen is perhaps getting your elbows nipped if the otters wanted to get somewhat facetious.

Yakioma straps , the buckle type cinch strap or equivalent is all that is needed I prefer the old style Yakima straight bar tower %26amp; load boat (s) sideways , one on each side of tower. Boats are on edge.

Do I need fancy car carrier for kayaks or can I just tie them to my racks with straps?
You can pick up foam pads at a sporting goods store that are designed as an inexpensive way to carry a kayak. The ones I have seen have slits in them to slip over the rack and are contoured for the kayak, which helps hold everything in place. I believe they cost about $30 for the set. They will protect the kayak from the the rack itself and allow you to tie it down more securely than you would be able to with just the racks. I have seen people use pieces of those foam eggshell mattress pads and old rugs without racks, just putting the kayak on the roof of the car and securing it with tie downs. If you have a rack already it may not cost you much more than $100 for a kayak carrier. I have found them to be well worth the $ as they make it much faster and easier to load the kayak.Do I need fancy car carrier for kayaks or can I just tie them to my racks with straps?
just strap them on should be fine. pass the straps through the grab loops though. the boats can slip a bit but they can't come off the grabs. we were driving to the a rivers put in with a boat haning of the side of the car by its grab loops. the boat was a day old too.... thank god!

Are inflatable kayaks sturdy?
I want a cheap kayak, like an inflatable, but I was just wondering if inflatables would pop, or fall down. Are inflatable kayaks sturdy?
Most inflatable kayaks are pretty sturdy and you really don't have to worry about them popping. I have a Sea Eagle explorer inflatable kayak that has been awesome but it might cost a little more than you want to spend. Amazon has a fairly good selection of inflatable kayaks for a decent price.
Check out this website as it gives tons of reviews and information on all of the different inflatable kayaks... http://www.inflatablekayakworld.comAre inflatable kayaks sturdy?
Quality inflatables are very sturdy. Whitewater rafts and commercial level Zodiacs are some of the toughest boats around. However, the cheapest inflatable kayaks are made of unreinforced vinyl (PVC), like a shower curtain, and they don't last.
Check out Innova kayaks. These use a tough, rubber-coated fabric that will last decades. Are inflatable kayaks sturdy?
There are some very stiff inflatables available. The inexpensive ones are simply 'one time' water toys. You need to try some out and then decide what to buy. If you expect to get an inflatable kayak that performs like a rigid boat you will be disappointed. Do a budget; PFD, helmet, flotation, and paddle. This gear may cost more than the 'cheap' kayak. Inquire at your local club about used rigid boats.

Are there any unbiased resources on the web that rate kayaks (as opposed to inidividual kayak reviews)? Thanks
I'm looking for something in list form that compares and RATES various brands and models of kayaks--other than general lists like Nextag, Epinions, MSN Shopping, etc. Something more along the lines of the way that Consumer Resports lists various brand ratings. Are there any unbiased resources on the web that rate kayaks (as opposed to inidividual kayak reviews)? Thanks
This is probably the best general paddling resource on the web:
http://www.paddling.net
There are user reviews from actual paddlers, basic boat guides that tell you who makes what, and you can post on the message boards and ask people who really are into paddling what they think about the boats you're considering.
The members of the site include hull designers from major kayak manufacturers, writers from international paddling magazines, and tens of thousands of regular people who love paddle sports and own boats.
Keep in mind, in the opinion of a whitewater paddler, there probably aren't ANY decent recreational kayaks, and to a recreational kayaker, they probably won't care for the low initial stability of a true sea kayak. Because of that, each boat "consumer" will rate a boat VERY differently.
Lists and ratings are ALWAYS subjective. Sort of like a Formula race car driver giving you a rating on a stock Hyundai. They just won't like it, so a truly UNbiased opinion is basically impossible. You won't find a Consumer Reports style of an analysis.
Find a boat dealer who stocks boats, and go test paddle. It's the best way to make a decision. Have fun!superchips

I want to know if where i can buy Malibu Kayaks in Philippines?
Manilla watersports or try www.e-bay.com.
Do you like the sit- on- top style kayaks or the sit in(cockpit) style kayaks?
The sit on tops are very versatile for small rivers, ocean, and warm weather fun. I have less experience with the sit-in types, but they seem to be great for warm and cooler weather - when you don't want to get real wet. Depending on the length and width, they can be more unstable in rough waters. Also, you need to learn to do that underwater flip in a sit-in type, where as a sit on top does not require this since they don't really flip.
So, it really depends on where and when you want to kayak. If I were just buying one, I'd go test them both out at a rental place - many have demo days.

Can recreational kayaks go on whitewater?
I just found out that what I bought was not a whitewater....Can recreational kayaks go on whitewater?
Can't really answer that question without knowing what model you bought. There are literally hundreds of variations in kayak design and configuration. Is it hardshell plastic? Does it have a closed deck, as in can you fit a snug neoprene sprayskirt over the cockpit coaming? How long and wide is it? Does it have a flat bottom or a distinct keel ridge?
And there are many classes of whitewater. I've taken my 15' aluminum frame and nylon skin folding sea kayak on rivers with short Class I and mild Class II rapids -- it was dicey since the boat did not turn as quickly as I would have liked and I got hung up a few times on ledges. You might squeak by on up to Class III in SOME (not all) rec kayaks but definitely not Class IV and up[. And the rec boat will not be ideal for the conditions even on the easier fast water. If that is your main purpose in paddling, either exchange the boat if you can and if you can't due to having already used it, you can always sell it on Craigslist -- rec boats are very popular lately. Can recreational kayaks go on whitewater?

Yes but! I assume you bought some kind of sea kayak..Today whitewater kayaks come in many styles and are each designed for a special use. Learn about slalom racing, downriver racing and play kayaks. Recreational type boats are usually very stable and they resist turning quickly. Whitewater requires boats that have rocker and usually a broad bow. Some recreational kayaks are made of materials that won't accept the beating that a rocky river will give it. Maybe you can trade your boat to some one on a lake.

me and my brother fish all the time and we always talked about getting small boats. is there any good 1-2 people kayaks or kanoes we want something that we will have leg room being that 5 hours may be spent in these. is there any good cheap canoes boats or kayaks that will stay afloat in a lake and will hold about 250 lbs of people maybe less or moreDoes anyone know anygood cheap kayaks or conoes 2 people?
I would ditch the kayak and go for a canoe traditional north American kind. the can hold a lot of kit enough for a week camping. there is plenty room for legs if you do not put too much kit in. Collman do some reasonable prices but look around the clubs and online.Does anyone know anygood cheap kayaks or conoes 2 people?
You definitely want a canoe and not a kayak for what you want to do. Check your local want ads or Craigslist for an Old Town Guide 147 or 160 canoe. These are great basic two-person canoes for fishing or just flatwater or stream paddling. They are tough and stable. You can often find new ones on sale at the end of the season at sporting goods stores for around $500 and I have seen used ones in decent condition for under $300. Most anything under $300 (used) or under $500 (new) is going to be unsafe junk. Remember you also have to buy paddles and life vests (ALWAYS wear your life vest, even if local law doesn't require it.) Also take at class in paddling and especially in water safety and learn how to safely select your route and handle your boat. Most states require you to register your canoe or kayak and pay a small annual fee. You will get a fine if you fail to do this. You need to be aware of the dangers of cold water when you canoe or kayak also. Even on a warm sunny day the water can be deadly cold and you can lose the ability to swim and rescue yourself within minutes if you fall in and are not dressed correctly
Canoeing and kayaking are a lot of fun as long as you have decent equipment and are well-prepared for anything that can happen. I have a canoe and 6 kayaks and go out all the time -- it upsets me when people die from drowning every week from going out unprepared.Does anyone know anygood cheap kayaks or conoes 2 people?
Yes, but - 'good cheap' is an oxymoron. Boats are cheap because they have defects of some sort. Canoes come in sizes starting at nine foot long and going up to 20 feet long. Visit boat clubs and marine dealers, ask about used canoes. Fiberglass/resin canoes are easy to repair. Aluminium canoes need a good welder. Try to find a used 16 foot aluminum canoe. Don't neglect the extra gear you must have: PFDs, paddles and flotation devices. Spend a Saturday and visit yard sales.

Sit-on-to vs regular Kayaks? Which is right for me?
I plan on taking it to the beach a few times, and definately in the mangrove swamps of Tampa bay and our fresh water springs. I do not mind getting wet, but I will be taking it out from time to time in the colder months and if I get really wet, I may not find it too pleasent. But the sit-on-tops seem to be beter for me becuase I can get in and out of them easier. But the salesman is telling that there is no real advantage to them cuase the regular kayaks are so hard to roll over anyway. Any advice?Sit-on-to vs regular Kayaks? Which is right for me?
I have to say Ive used both and cannos too. For what your looking to do I feel you would like the sit on top. There are also sail kits for the sit on type, helps on making longer trips across inland open water.
I used a sit on to fish salt and fresh water as well as scuba diving. I think also if you buy the SIT ON and dont like it you will be able to sell quite quickly and with no loss.Sit-on-to vs regular Kayaks? Which is right for me?
I have a two seater sit-on-top type and find it great for ocean and lake fishing and kayaking. It's definitely easier to get in and out in my opinion. There's also dry storage usually so you can put things inside and keep them dry.Sit-on-to vs regular Kayaks? Which is right for me?
sit on tops are much safer if you're inexperienced and they're definitley less hassle if you live somewhere as warm as florida they'd also probably be alot more comfortable (closeddeck boats can get hot on a warm day. on the other hand, sit on tops are less high performance- they'll go alot slower.

Is there anywhere you can rent canoes/kayaks near Deception Pass?
Not kayak tours - $35 per adult is way too expensive..Is there anywhere you can rent canoes/kayaks near Deception Pass?
You can rent kayaks from the Sea Kayak Shop in Anacortes. However, you must show proof of qualified instruction before you can rent their equipment.

Are sevylor or advanced element Kayaks good?
Yes. Sevylor manufactures inflateable watercraft. They are not rigid and hence difficult to manuever. You need to try one our before buying. Rigid boats are usually more responsive to control and paddle.
How good are 2 person Kayaks???how good are tandem Kayaks?
So how good are twoperson(a.k.a tandem) Kayaks?? What are some good brands?? What are some good models?? What is a good one for under 1,000$??
PLEASE HELP!!!!How good are 2 person Kayaks???how good are tandem Kayaks?
Why are you inquiring about tandem kayaks? Models are available for flat water, rivers and the sea/ocean. Good is a relative term. You will get what you pay for. Inexpensive kayaks have a short life and often are poorly designed and made. Try the library or book shop for books about kayaking. Inquire at the National office for kayaking. ACA or BCU in the USA or UK, You also could investigate kayak schools. Tandem kayaking is much more difficult solo boating!wheels and tires

Do inflatable Kayaks work well?
I was thinking about buying a kayak, nothing too fancy or expensive, just something to take out on the weekends on a small river near my house. Looking to spend under $200 although the less the better. I see these inflatable kayaks, do they actually work and are they stable?
Also, on a side note what stores sell kayaks for cheap prices. I have a Bass Pro Shop and a Gander Mountain near my house, what other stores are options?Do inflatable Kayaks work well?
so I guess the answer to your question, based on the prior two respondants, is no they don't work well, the only time you should use one is when there is no current, no breeze, and no hazards such as trees and rocks. May as well buy a cheap raft if that's the case.Do inflatable Kayaks work well?
This is just one option of many.
I bought my g-son a Coleman at walmart for about 60 $. His is a one person kayak and more like a floaty with a back rest. We float a class 2 river and they are hard to maneuver in the wind. On hot days we fight over it because you will get wet in it. Very comfortable because of the back rest. If you aren't going to paddle where there are a lot of sharp rocks and limbs, its a good choice. Check out the gauge of the PVC its made of. 22g. is just so so.
DO NOT get a two person kayak. That takes all the fun out of it!Do inflatable Kayaks work well?
many stores sell inflatable kayaks and regular kayaks.Inflatable kayaks can be good depending on the current and wind. if there is too much it can be hard to control. Also if there are rocks and trees they can pop. They also can be hard to stear. But under good, calm, condition they can work wonders

Do you usualy get soaked when your kayaking? And can kayaks tip over easily?
i wanna get into kayakingDo you usualy get soaked when your kayaking? And can kayaks tip over easily?
It depends on the kayak. If you use the open type "sit on top" kayaks that some people use at the beach for surf paddling, you will get wet. And if you kayak white water rapids your upper body will often get wet from the spray of the waves.
But most kayaking on lakes and rivers is done in "closed boats" which have a small cockpit where you tuck your legs inside the boat. You wear a "spray skirt" around your waist, a stretchy neoprene cover that slips over the edge of the cockpit opening and keeps any splashed water from getting into the boat. Recreational kayaks, the sort that you will probably rent if you are a beginner, are very stable and not tippy.
More advanced kayaks, for racing or some types that people use in the ocean, tend to be more tippy but by the time a kayaker gets to a skill level of using those types they know how keep them stable or roll back up if they are flipped.
I kayak quite often in lakes and rivers. The only parts of me that get wet most of the time are my hands from the water that runs off the paddle and my feet, from wading in when I launch the boat.Do you usualy get soaked when your kayaking? And can kayaks tip over easily?
Kayaks are boats designed to keep the paddler dry. It is possible to keep all of the body dry except the face. Very narror kayaks with rounded bottoms are tippy! Most sport kayaks are stable. Seat height also determines stability. Are kayaks tippy? Yes and no! The skill of the paddler determines its stability. The 'fail safe' is a secure roll. If you are really intent on taking up the sport attend a school or take classes. Find your nearest club.Do you usualy get soaked when your kayaking? And can kayaks tip over easily?
if you get a recreational kayak they don't tip, your arms and face might get a bit wet from the splash of the paddles other then that you wont get too wet and they don't tip easy
You actually stay dry and they don't tip over very easily like you might think. I have used one for fishing.

I am a UK size 20 and my hub wants us to join a kayak club, but I am worried I wont fit! Do kayaks have room?
I just looked up the difference in women's clothing sizes between the US and the UK. Looks like the UK 20 is similar to a US 18. You'll have no problems at all. I myself was once a US 20 when I began kayaking years ago. There are boats that you will fit into. The best way to figure out what will work is to find a retailer that will let you try them out - test paddle them. Get the boat that is appropriate for the water you plan to spend most of the time on, and the one which your fit most comfortably in, and you'll have a great time.I am a UK size 20 and my hub wants us to join a kayak club, but I am worried I wont fit! Contact the British Canoe Union. Inquire about clubs near you. Go to your nearest boat seller and shop. Cockpits vary in size and can be altered to fit you. Boats vary in volume. Most carry information about suggested capacities, Try Pyranha for specific information...Best, a boat tryout. The main factor for kayaks is weight. Whitewater kayaks are available that will handle up to 200+ LB. I whitewater kayak with a lady that I'd guess was 220 LB (6' 2" and not anorexic) and she has done well at it. You might have to try out a few boats to find the most appropriate one.

Stand on a kayak?
Maybe if you were an acrobat with something to prove! LOL!
Seriously, though, Wilderness Systems makes a great fishing kayak.
But I would never stand up in ANY kayak, I don't care what anyone else says. It's almost like standing on the seat of a bicycle. You can do it but it's not recommended. What are some quality fishing Kayaks?

How big are kayaks? Does someone 6'1 , 300 pounds fit in one?
Just wondering how big and accomodating they are for an upcoming trip...How big are kayaks? Does someone 6'1 , 300 pounds fit in one?
I'm six three, over three-hundred and I fit in one. I don't glide along as well as my friends, but I do have a ferocious stroke, so I'm able to keep up. The other thing is a our size, you will have to get one of the larger ones, they aren't as nimble and as well at turning, but honestly I don't like heavy whitewater in a kayak. I like sea kayaks.

I believe they have weight ratings on them, either get one that you can sit on the top of it, or you might drag a bit in the sit in ones. You'll have a blast!trade in value

Is there a place to rent kayaks in Taos, NM or Santa Fe, NM?
Do not want a guided trip. I just need to rent kayaks, pfd's, and helmets (if available). Would need them July 4th weekend. Is there a place to rent kayaks in Taos, NM or Santa Fe, NM?
I found two:
http://www.go-newmexico.com/Santa-Fe/Gui鈥?/a>
The one is between Taos and Santa Fe (they rent "funyaks" which I gather are a kind of recreational boat, not suitable for whitewater.) The other, in Santa Fe, lists that they rent kayaks. I would call them soon if I were you -- they are bound to run out of gear quickly for a holiday weekend.
I'm assuming you are experienced paddlers and are not attempting any class of water that could be dangerously beyond your capacity? Not trying to dis you -- I worked for an outfitter for a while and have known a lot of people who got hurt and even died from jumping into "adventures" they were nowhere near prepared to deal with.
Hope you find the gear you need and have a fun trip.

Do you get very wet in closed kayaks when going in rivers? ?
Hi, I'm going kayaking in closed kayaks on the river. Do you get very wet?Do you get very wet in closed kayaks when going in rivers? ?
It depends on how big the water is and what you're wearing.
If you're on flat water, then you're not going to get very wet at all, maybe a couple occasional drips of water from the paddle and that's it.
On whitewater, most boaters wear a drytop and a good-fitting sprayskirt. The drytop has latex or neoprene gaskets at the neck and wrists and does a good job keeping the water out, even while rolling. If you're just wearing a splash jacket or no jacket at all, you will get wet. A good sprayskirt stretches flat across the cockpit (the opening where you sit) and has a good elastic band that makes a watertight seal. A small amount of water (a couple cups) still manages to find its way into the boat, but for the most part, you stay dry.
In cold weather and water, some boaters opt for a drysuit. Like the drytop, it has gaskets at the neck and wrists. In addition, it has gaskets or socks at the ankles, so even if you end up swimming, you're still dry.
Most usually, at least I do on white water rivers. Waves and spray hit almost any part of my body that is not in the kayak. A dry drop can prevent much of this from actually hitting your body, but then you will get condensation from your sweat inside. Even with a good spray skirt, some water eventually gets inside the boat and I almost always find myself sitting in a puddle of water by the end fo the day.
Of course everyone once in a while I find myself upside down and immersed in the river. Usually my roll gets me right side up, but I get quite wet in the process. If for some reason I miss my roll, the result is usually a long swim.
Do you get very wet in closed kayaks when going in rivers? ?
Curious question? River kayaking is a wet sport. Your upper torso is exposed to whitewater. Special clothing can negate all wetting except for your face. Skilled paddlers choose 'dry routes' through rapids to avoid excess wetting. Nose and ear protection require special devices. Buy some lessons and learn about cold water hazards.
HAHAHA - depends what the consitions are
I do a lot of serious white water kayaking, check me out on the link below..........

So i get soaked becasue I throw my self downrapids and roll, but if your going to just paddle flat water you'll only get wet if your spashed, or the wind spray gets you
Anyway its part of the fun of the sport, kayaking involves getting a bit wet......Do you get very wet in closed kayaks when going in rivers? ?
no actually. not if your careful. you on water so i mean staying dry is never a garentee but i go kayaking alot an i dont get wet.

What are the best brands of kayaks?
What are the best brands of kayaksWhat are the best brands of kayaks?
That's a very open ended question. You won't get a definitive answer because it's like asking "who makes the best automobile?" In terms of performance, reliability, fuel economy, towing capacity, price ...? Different things are important to different people. And there are different kayaks for different types of paddling. I love my NDK Explorer Sea Kayak for the ocean and long trips, but it's certainly not the right boat for whitewater, racing, surfing, fishing, ...
Below are some links to some major manufacturers. It's not a comprehensive list. Any kayaks from any of these will be pretty well built, and I would buy from any of them if they had a design that I liked. Also a link to paddling.net, which has some information and reviews.

It really depends of what type of kayaking your into?

there is a lake right there, u can launch there from the ground.
If I want to appear to have an adventurous and well-balance life, should I put kayaks or skis on my car's roof
rack, or maybe order used souveniers from ebay to make it look like i'm well travelled?
I don't want anyone to know that i have no hobbies and never do anything fun. :/If I want to appear to have an adventurous and well-balance life, should I put kayaks or skis on my car's roof
yeah! that sounds like a great idea. and then when you are out your can live vicarously through other peoples stories! and then, and then, and then you could run for president and everyone would like you because you had such an adventurous life! but then your oppenent would be 'this guys a schmuck and still lives in his moms basement!' and then everyone would hate you and you will die alone.
This is hilarious!!
What you SHOULD do is take the money you'd spend on LOOKING like you travel and put it in savings...do this every week for a couple months. Once you hit the amount you need to go where you want, then ACTUALLY go there!
Good luck, buddy! If I want to appear to have an adventurous and well-balance life, should I put kayaks or skis on my car's roof
Get a hobby and do something fun. Try skateboarding.
Besides, having sporting equipment on the roof rack for an extended period makes you look like you are either very lazy and haven't taken the stuff off yet, or you are trying to look like you use the stuff. When I go snowboarding, I can't wait to get the gear off the roof.
Don't listen to them. Get both... and a gun rack!!If I want to appear to have an adventurous and well-balance life, should I put kayaks or skis on my car's roof
Sure why not sure looks cool to me
hey man, nobody likes a poser. and i don't mean that in a mean way towards you. and it'll probably be hard to keep the lie up. if you wanna buy that stuff, feel free, but if you never use it then that is just a waste. if you currently have no hobbies or interests, why don't you try doing some of these things. it may turn out that you like kayaking or skiing or rock climbing. and remember, not everybody is an outdoor person, and you may not be, which is fine. if the people you are around are critical of you because you don't do outdoor stuff, then you should probably go hang out with different people. well, my advice is to try everything once, you may like it and be able to justify your purchases and no longer be a poser (again, no offense by using that word).

I have a question on kayaks?
how good are Coleman inflatable kayaks?
we want to go river and lake kayaking, and perhaps on the sea too (very calm, no tide)
any suggestions as to a good yet cheap kayak? what about tandems?I have a question on kayaks?
Inflatables in general tend to be slow and will not handle well in windy conditions. I'd be concerned about the construction of cheaper ones such as the Coleman. I wouldn't take them anywhere shallow (such as some rivers) where they could scrape on the bottom. There are some high-quality inflatables that have construction and materials similar to a whitewater raft. However, they're also rather expensive, at least as much as a comparable hardshell.
Check out local kayak shops. Many offer cheap or free demos of boats, which is the only way to know for sure whether a kayak is right for you. Shops also often sell used kayaks at good discounts. You could also check out sporting goods stores, but I wouldn't necessarily rely on their advice since you can't be sure the salesperson has even been in a kayak. Another option is to check craigslist and classified ads for used kayaks.
As for tandems, that's entirely a matter of personal preference. There are some recreational boats that are 'convertible' with seats that can be adjusted for one paddler or two. Most paddlers prefer to paddle single boats. I've tried a tandem a few times. It's fun but it requires coordination and communication between the paddlers. For this reason, many paddlers refer to them as 'divorce boats'.I have a question on kayaks?
Go to a major sporting goods store and ask them what they recommend then shop for it on ebay at a discountI have a question on kayaks?
I'm definitely not a fan. If you've never been in a kayak before, you might think it's great for a month or so, but the novelty will wear off quickly. They are prone to holes / tears from rocks, and they provide more resistance (meaning you work harder) to move them.

Ive kayaked for 3 years, I have 4 kayaks 1 for salt, calm, river, and fishing,.
It all depend on what you want to do. it look like you are looking for a cruising kayak. You don't want any real action just having fun in the sun.
If you want a sit in i'd recommend going to A Dick's Sporting good store. They have a few good medium price range kayaks.300 Flat or less. I would get the Zeskey 9.5
If you want a sit on top kayak they are around the same price or less.
And the are very fun for taking the (husband/Wife or girlfriend/boyfriend) out in the ocean it will be easy enough for 1 to control while the other looks at the sea life below.
I got my FIRST kayak at Academy sports and outdoors. It was Pelican it is great for beginners easy to control and cheap. 220 for the newer model.
Im not to fond of inflatable. I bought one to see how long it would last, In class 1 rapids i busted it, *im used to riding class3 or 4*.
so i would not recommend the inflatable.

I am now living in San Diego area. Do I need any permit to launch kayaks or canoes in public rivers or lakes?
I don't think so, but I'm not 100% sure. I have launched kayaks in Lake Murray and Mission Bay without permit and didn't get in trouble. Good luck finding a river though.

They have a free classifieds section for kayaks, including a section for people who are looking to buy one. I've bought and sold most of my own kayaks via my local Craigslist which works well. It's best to sell locally and for cash pick-up only. If you can wait until Spring, though, you will get more money for it.
As for shipping, you can actually ship a plastic kayak via companies like UPS for not as much as you might think (usually around $100). But you should leave that up to the buyer.
Watch out for scammers though -- every time I place an ad selling a kayak I get hits from rip-off artists (mostly from Nigeria or Eastern Europe) who claim they want to buy the boat with a bank check (which always turns out to be fake) and have some "shipping agent" come to my house to collect cash for the "delivery." You can usually spot them because their English is bad in the email and you can tell they have no idea even what a kayak is. They will offet you thousands more than you are asking for the boat and then say you can cash the (fake) check and give them the change. Believe it or not, people fall for this all the time.
I also bought my kayaks off of craigslist. Have seen so many go before I got a chance to respond too so it's a good market (at least in Florida). I was talking to another seller and he said they keep their values. He was suppose to sell it at a yard sale but someone hounded him so much that he sold it to him before the sale. (craigslist listing and his was for a garage sale, just had word kayak in it)Kayaks for sell any one know where and how to sell it?
Where do you live? Inquire at the local boating club. Run a classified ad in your daily paper. Tell the name of the kayak, its age and the extra gear that may be included. Shipping kayaks is always a problem and it is expensive. Talk with the local boat dealer.

Roof racks, kayaks, saturn vues and no luggage rack?
I have a saturn vue, new in 2007. This vehicle did not come with a luggage rack. I have two kayaks that i want to attach to my car and drive a long distance going roughly 70 mph. It appears i'll have to install a permanent system, but i'm at a loss of where to start. Does anyone have any advice on where to buy luggage racks and then kayak carriers, or if there is an all in one set? Thanks!Roof racks, kayaks, saturn vues and no luggage rack?
Earlier this spring I purchased a complete rack system for my Ford Focus from www.kayaks.net. They set me up with the fit kit and clamps that attach the bars to the roof rack, the bars, locks, and two kayak holders all made by Thule. It was pretty easy to install, you just have to follow the instructions provided for each piece. I called the customer service department for kayaks.net and they helped me pick out all of the right pieces for my Focus, but I know you can get the same info off Thule's site too.
This rack set up was a bit pricey but definitely worth the investment. Before I had a set of foam kayak blocks and a set of straps to attach my kayak to my car (this is a less expensive solution to your problem, these sets typically cost $50-$60). These foam block sets are easy to use, I just wanted something that I also put a luggage box on as well.
Hope this info is some help to you. Good Luck!Roof racks, kayaks, saturn vues and no luggage rack?
In Canada I would direct you to Canadian Tire. They can outfit just about any vehicle. Since the Saturn is a GM product it is likely that the Thule system will fit.
I ran your vehicle through the Thule web site and found a problem. Go to a Thule Dealer and watch them work the magic.

I have a GMC envoy. I have 2 kayaks. Anyone know what kind of roof carrier would be best and where to get?
I built mine for a pickup and now use foam blocks for single canoe on Jeep.
If I had to haul 2 kayaks, I'd look at Yakima or Thule
http://www.rei.com/racksI have a GMC envoy. I have 2 kayaks. Anyone know what kind of roof carrier would be best and where to get?
Well if you have an existing factory rack that consists of crossbars then all you would need would be a set a Yakima Hullraisers or hully rollers. Both easily mount onto existing factory rack systems and Yakima has a lifetime guarantee, something that Thule does not. If you don't have a factory rack then Yakima can also fit your vehicle with a cross bar system. They are available at Joe's Sports and outdoors and I also believe that REI carries Yakima products.I have a GMC envoy. I have 2 kayaks. My personal choice would be one of Thule's carriers (and the requisite rack system):
http://www.thuleracks.com/carrier_water1鈥?/a>
While Thule and Yakima both offer similar products and lifetime warranties, I find the Thule products tend to feel better-built. They're also made in the US, whereas Yakima's products are imported.
If you want to use only one carrier, Thule has the Stacker, which holds up to 4 kayaks:
http://www.thuleracks.com/product.asp?de鈥?/a>
The other products hold a single kayak, but you should have more than enough rack width to mount multiple carriers.

What is the normal weight limit for sea kayaks? Or kayaks in general?
Not joking here. What is the normal weight limit for sea kayaks? Or kayaks in general?
if you're talking about capacity, it depends on boat to boat.
generally speaking, most of the "middle of the road" kayaks (touring or recreational) can handle about 300-400lbs... I have seen larger touring (sea) kayaks that can hold almost 500lbs, but those are few and far between. There are also "pakboats" kayaks that have about 250lbs capacity. What is the normal weight limit for sea kayaks? Or kayaks in general?
17.5 kg.

What happened to islander brand kayaks, is the swifty 2008 model good for beginners?
if you're a beginner you might want to rent a few different kayaks to see what you're most comfortable with.
Any one know of a good web site where they stock second hand sea kayaks?
Many paddling shops sell used boats, and you can usually find great deals on websites like Craigslist or your local paper classifieds. Many times, used or second hand boats sell too quickly to list them on a website - so I don't know that I'd say that any shop actually "stocks" them. It would be more of a hit and miss situation.
Many trip outfitters will sell their kayaks after a season or two of rental use. You can get great deals from some of them too. Some state parks stock various boats (not likely sea kayaks, but you never know). When they sell off their boats - should be great deals to be had. With rental companies - they'll have a quantity of the same boats on sale.

Can you transport 2 kayaks on a bare roof?
i have 2 kayaks an di need to transport them but i cant afford to put a rack on my car for $350, so i was wondering if there is a cheaper alternative? if this is possible what is the best way to do it? thanks!!!Can you transport 2 kayaks on a bare roof?
Definitely do not transport your yaks on a bare roof. They will slide off. A cheap alternative to purchasing a full roof rack system you can purchase a foam block and strap set that is made to sit on top of your roof for transporting kayaks. The foam blocks can either sit on your bare roof or be put on your factory cross bars. These kits typically cost $49-69. Some companies sell just the blocks too for those people that already have tie downs, the blocks alone typically cost around $29.Can you transport 2 kayaks on a bare roof?
Nope this wont work several reasons..
1. The supports under the roof will support the kayaks but the bare roof will be destroyed.
2. Even using towels or blankets along with tie-downs wont work because they will slide off.
Depending on the year, make and model try checking into rain gutter or drip rail holders because you can get these for under $100.00 dollars but check the weight ratings.pontoon boats

I am looking for a way to carry my 2 kayaks while towing my 5th wheel camper. Any suggestions?
depends on the truck but a roof rack should work.I am looking for a way to carry my 2 kayaks while towing my 5th wheel camper. Any suggestions?
u haul, or just pull it all with a rope, lol good luckI am looking for a way to carry my 2 kayaks while towing my 5th wheel camper. Any suggestions?
I'm assuming the problem is that after you hook the camper up, there isn't enough space left over the cab/hood. If so, can you get a rack that fits on the camper?

Could anyone tell me which of the following two inflatable kayaks is best -?
Intex K1 Challenger or the Bestway WaveLine. I'll mainly be using it on rivers possible calm ocean if that would be ok, also could anyone give me any other brands I don't want to spend more that 拢100.
ThanksCould anyone tell me which of the following two inflatable kayaks is best -?
I am not familiar with the Bestway WaveLine but I know of several people who have the Intex K1 Challenger and really love it. For a cheap inflatable kayak it seems to be quite good. Check out this site http://www.inflatablekayakworld.com . They give reviews of most of the different inflatable kayaks.

For the State of Indiana do I need a license to use kayaks?
My mom bought kayaks to use on the rivers and lakes in Indiana, does she need a license or permit? I tried looking it up on Indiana DNR website but couldn't find anything. Please Help!!For the State of Indiana do I need a license to use kayaks?
I don't know of any state that requires a person to hold a license for canoeing or kayaking. Some states require that the boats themselves be registered. Some don't. It looks like Indiana only requires motorized boats to be registered.
Unofficial sites that say only motorized vessels need to be registered:

Official site, but the link to boat registration is dead:

I'm just guessing, but you may need to register them. I know in Michigan you do.

What is the average weight of canoes, kayaks, and rowboats?
Which one would be easiest to be carried about 250' to the river's edge by one person? What is the average weight of canoes, kayaks, and rowboats?
Kayaks can be anywhere from 35-60 lbs on average. Good Kayaks are made of light layered poly/plastics (like mine). The lightest Kayaks are expensive and are made out of carbon fiber etc. and are painted and hence can be easily damaged.
Canoes are heavy at 70-100 lbs, also tandem Kayaks can way this much as well.
Rowboats are fairly light in some cases when smaller and made from aluminum. Average weight is 50-60 lbs.

What do Pyranha kayaks generally cost?
For like your average quality level Pyranha kayak nothing fancy. I couldn't find prices on their website. Thanks : )What do Pyranha kayaks generally cost?
If you are looking at new river running or playboating kayaks you are looking at around $600-$800 dollars. If you want a used kayak or a deal you should try contacting your local kayak shop for their prices and they may know of a kayak swap/sale where you can look for used boats for a better price. Depending on where you live you may also be able to check the newspaper ads. Where I am there are always several boats for sale. Make sure you demo the boat before you commit and good luck! What do Pyranha kayaks generally cost?
try to look in your local canoe shops. prices will vary vary through the Uk and you could be the USAWhat do Pyranha kayaks generally cost?
Hello, in the UK the prices vary from 拢450.00 to 拢850.00 depending on the type of kayak you are looking for. Second hand prices will vary form about 拢250.00 to 拢600.00.
If you are going for second hand have a careful look for any kinks in the plastic around about the cockpit area. The boats are generally hard wearing and can be a good buy second hand.
If you are based in the states would imagine prices wouldn't vary too much from the above.
Have fun when you get the boat of your dreams.
